This isn't a debate anymore. 89 Metacritic, a 9.3 user score (the highest in Metacritic history), 8 million copies in five months, and a 30th-anniversary campaign that finally gives RE7's dread a worthy follow-up.
Grace's first-person sections are the scariest thing Capcom has made since 2017. Leon's third-person half is the purest RE4 catharsis in 20 years.

2. Silent Hill f (Sep 2025) — The Art House Hit
Technically a 2025 game. In every "best horror of 2026" conversation, it's still the reference point.
86 Metacritic on PS5, an OpenCritic 88%, 2 million copies shipped by April 2026. Ryukishi07's story, kera's creature design, and Akira Yamaoka's score make it the most beautiful horror game ever made — 1960s Japan, cherry blossoms, and dread that creeps instead of jumps.

3. The Outlast Trials — Still the Best Co-Op Horror
March 2024's surprise hit has aged into the most reliably updated horror game alive. Season 7 "Project Boneyard" (July 14, 2026) added the Prison Farm, a terrifying new trial with Sergeant Coyle, and the shambling "Biter" enemy.
94% positive on Steam from 41,000+ reviews, and it keeps getting better. Best with 3–4 friends; brutal solo.
4. Silent Hill 2 Remake (2024) — The Modern Canon
Bloober Team's remake is the reason the franchise is alive in 2026. It's still the best psychological horror of the console generation, and it's finally cheap enough to recommend unconditionally.
Pyramid Head hasn't lost a step. The fog levels on the PS5 are absurd.
5. Alan Wake 2 (2023) — The Mind-Bend
Remedy's masterpiece keeps haunting us two years on. The Lake House expansion, the musical number, the sheer craft — it's the closest games have come to prestige TV horror.
Its "This House of Dreams" chapter alone is scarier than most full games.
6. Dead Space Remake (2023) — Body Horror, Perfected
The gold standard for remakes, and the benchmark for dismemberment horror. If you've never played it, the 2026 price (it's routinely under $20 now) makes it an instant recommendation.
7. Alien: Isolation (2014) — The AI Stalker Benchmark
Eleven years old and still unmatched. No game has built a smarter stalker than the Alien, and the 2024 re-release brought it to modern consoles.

8. Amnesia: The Bunker (2023) — The Modern Amnesia

Still the best entry point for horror newcomers, and still terrifying in VR. It's almost always under $10 on sale. The Baker mansion remains the best first act in horror gaming.
10. Phasmophobia and Lethal Company — The Social Era
Two games, one entry, because they serve the same table: game night with friends.
Phasmophobia got its big 13 Willow Street rework on July 21, 2026 (1.0 moved to 2027, but the QoL updates keep coming). Lethal Company's v80 "Blooming Update" (April 2026) added a Utility Slot and three new creatures.
