Quick verdict: Single-player games are my non-negotiable. No battle pass, no FOMO, no daily chores, just a world and a story that stays where I left it. This list is organized by how much time you actually have, because "best game ever" is useless if you've got a 9-to-5 and a social life. If I had to defend one game to anyone in 2026, it's still Baldur's Gate 3, but Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is the one that surprised me most this year.

How This List Is Organized
Every "best single-player games" list on the internet assumes you have unlimited free time. I don't, and you probably don't either. So this list is sorted by commitment level:
- The "I have 200 hours" tier. The big, immersive worlds. Start these on a long weekend.
- The "I have 30 to 50 hours" tier. Long enough to feel epic, short enough to finish before the month ends.
- The "one weekend" tier. Short, dense, unforgettable. The ones you finish and immediately want to talk about.
All playtimes come from HowLongToBeat averages, which is the most honest source I know for "how long is this actually going to take me."
The "I Have 200 Hours" Tier
Baldur's Gate 3
The 73-hour main story (181 hours for everything) is not a bug, it's the selling point. No two players experience the same game: the choices, the companion stories, the sheer number of ways to solve any given problem. I've played it three times and still found new quest lines on run three. If you're overwhelmed, our BG3 beginner builds will get you through the first act, which is the part where most people quit.
Elden Ring
The most-awarded game of its generation, and the 100+ hours claim is real. It's the rare open world where you can't see everything on the map, and that's the point: discovery is the reward. It's also famously hard, but our Elden Ring beginner guide exists precisely because the game is more forgiving than its reputation.
Red Dead Redemption 2
60 hours of the most alive game world ever built. The story is slow and that's the feature: it's about the journey, the camp, the horse, the hunting trip you took because you weren't ready to continue the main quest. It sells in the millions every year for a reason. Money tips, if the economy frustrates you, are in our RDR2 money guide.
Cyberpunk 2077
The comeback story of the generation. Version 2.0 plus the Phantom Liberty expansion turned a launch disaster into one of the best first-person RPGs ever made, and the city of Night City is unmatched as a setting. The main path is around 30 hours, but the side content will drag you to 100 if you let it. Our Cyberpunk builds cover the current meta.
The "I Have 30 to 50 Hours" Tier
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
The surprise of 2025 that's still dominating 2026 conversations: 4 million copies sold, three DLCs out, and a 50-hour main campaign that's the most authentic medieval world ever put in a game. You start as a peasant who can't read and you feel the improvement. It's slower than most RPGs and that's why people love it. I almost skipped it because of the first game's jank. Don't make my mistake.
Monster Hunter Wilds
Wilds is the best solo Monster Hunter ever, even though nobody markets it that way. The 40-hour campaign is fully playable alone, the open zones are gorgeous, and the monsters are the best the series has made. It's also the perfect "one hunt before bed" game after the story ends. Our Wilds beginner guide covers the first 10 hours.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
The sequel that took nine years and still delivered. 25 to 35 hours of the best movement in any metroidvania, a huge map, and a difficulty curve that respects you. It's a single-player game in the purest sense: one character, one world, zero filler. More in our Silksong guide.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The 2015 classic that still defines the genre's storytelling standard. The main path is about 50 hours, but the DLC (especially Blood and Wine) is the best content in the game. If you haven't played it, the next-gen update makes it look current, and it goes on sale for pocket change constantly.
Ghost of Yotei
Sucker Punch's follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima landed October 2, 2025 on PS5 and it's the samurai formula perfected: feudal Japan, a revenge story with a female lead, and some of the best combat feel in the genre. Worth noting: the promised PC port reportedly fell through earlier this year, so it's a PS5 game for now.
The "One Weekend" Tier
Hades 2
The 1.0 release in 2025 made this a complete package: 30 to 45 minutes per run, a story that keeps going long after you'd expect, and the best characters in the genre. It's the rare game that respects a busy week and rewards a full Saturday. Our Hades 2 boons guide helps with the first clear.
Tunic
A tiny fox in a big world, and the best "figure it out yourself" game since the original Zelda's manual. The manual in this game is a collectible you find pieces of, and I have never felt smarter than when I understood one of its secrets. About 15 hours, all of it magic.
Outer Wilds
The only game where "knowledge is the only progression" actually works. You have 22 minutes per loop, a solar system to explore, and no combat, just curiosity. It's a once-in-a-decade experience and I will not say a single word about the ending. Just play it.
Portal
Still perfect, still short, still the best 10 hours of puzzle storytelling ever made. If you've somehow never played it, it's the cheapest game on this list and it runs on literally anything, including the low-end setups we cover in our low-end PC games list.
God of War (2018)
The soft reboot that made a rage monster a father. About 25 hours, one of the best-written father-son stories in any medium, and the axe-throwing combat has no equal. If you have a PS4 or PS5 sitting around, this is the easiest recommendation on the list.
The Best Storytelling Tier
If "best story" is the search term, these are the emotional picks:
- **Death Stranding 2: On the Beach:* Kojima's weirdest and most sincere work, and somehow his most commercial. PS5 since June 26, 2025, and the PC port landed March 19, 2026 with unlocked frame rates and ultrawide support. It passed 2 million copies sold after the PC release. It's a game about carrying packages and connecting* people, and it will make you cry, which is not a sentence I expected to write about a Kojima game.
- **RDR2 and The Witcher 3:** already covered above, and both are correct answers to "games with the best story."
- **Baldur's Gate 3 again:** the companion writing is the best in the genre, full stop.
If your taste runs darker, our horror games 2026 list has the scarier end of the storytelling spectrum, and the scariest horror games of all time covers the classics.
Best on a Budget
The patient gamer's secret: most of this list is 50 to 75 percent off during Steam and PlayStation sales. The Witcher 3, Portal, Tunic, and Outer Wilds all dip below $10 regularly. Buying games at full price in 2026 is a hobby for people with more money than patience, and the why you don't own your games argument makes a one-time purchase even more attractive. Single-player games are the best-value category in gaming: buy once, own forever, no subscription.
New and Upcoming: What to Watch
- **GTA 6:** November 19, 2026. The biggest single-player event in the history of the medium, and it's a month out. Everything we know is in our GTA 6 hub.
- **Ocarina of Time Remake:** the Switch 2 exclusive everyone's waiting for, still slated for 2026. Full breakdown in our OoT Remake guide.
- **Fable:** still officially scheduled for 2026, still with no firm date. I'll believe it when I see a release date.

Monster Hunter Wilds and Silksong have both hit the service this year, and the catalog also rotates Hades 2 in occasionally. For pure value, Wilds on Game Pass is the current winner, since a month of the subscription is cheaper than the game itself.
What are the longest single-player games?
Baldur's Gate 3 (181 hours for completionists), Elden Ring (100+ without the DLC, 150+ with it), and Cyberpunk 2077 (100+ with side content). Red Dead Redemption 2 and The Witcher 3 both stretch past 150 hours if you do everything. The completion times come from HowLongToBeat averages.
What's the best single-player game for a low-end PC?
Portal, Tunic, and Outer Wilds all run on modest hardware, and Hades 2 is shockingly light. Our best games for low-end PCs list has a fuller breakdown, including The Witcher 3, which scales beautifully.
Are single-player games dying?
No, and the opposite is happening. Baldur's Gate 3 won everything, KCD2 sold 4 million, GTA 6 is about to be the biggest entertainment launch in history. Live-service burnout is real, which is why the "games you can finish" category keeps growing. Single-player is having a renaissance and it's priced like it.
Which single-player game should I play first?
Baldur's Gate 3 if you want the best of everything, Portal if you want to be done in a weekend, Red Dead Redemption 2 if you want to disappear into a world for a month. There's no wrong answer on this list, which is the point.
Is GTA 6 coming to PC at launch?
No. November 19, 2026 is a PS5 and Xbox Series launch; the PC version historically arrives later. Everything confirmed so far is tracked in our GTA 6 release hub.
